Scafell Pike

Park at: Wasdale Head Car Park (free parking and toilets)

Distance: 6 mile in total returning the same way

Duration: 5 - 6 hours in total returning the same way

Height: 978m / 3,209ft

Wainwright height ranking: 1 of 214

1) Exit Wasdale Head Car Park turning left back onto the road, walking past the toilets.

2) Turn left into a field with a sign detailing 'Scafell Pike via Lingmell 2 1/2 mile'

3) Cross straight over the field to a bridge. Cross over the bridge and turn right through a gate onto a stoney ascending path.

4) Follow the stoney path for around 1 mile until the path crosses Lingmell Beck.

5) Once you’ve crossed Lingmell Beck the ascent becomes steeper for a short distance of less than half a mile.

6) Continue along the ascending stoney path until you reach a fork. Take the left and most obvious path. The path heading right will take you towards Scafell (not Scafell Pike) and Mickledore.

7) After around 1 mile the path turns right onto the final ascent. The path is still clear however it is slightly more difficult to walk on with much of the path made up of loose rocks that zig zags up to the top.

8) A trig point and a stepped cairn mark the summit. Enjoy the views of the Lakeland Fells from Englands highest mountain before descending back down the same way that you came up.
